Existing icon is a 2D sun - too generic.
Stylize the sun as hair of humanized Helios - greek sun god. Make him wear shades not just for the cool effect but to communicate he's burning hot, everything is just too bright. Shades also reenforces hi-tech tone. The "glint-effect" on the left eye area is both hi-tech and playful.
On the second icon, made the sun as headdress of greek helmet. Helmet for defender/security which is a major element of computer networking. Still uses the "glint-effect" on the eye to retain hip, a bit naughty character.
